Stallion Approval

Stallions are able to be approved for breeding from 3 years and older. Foals, yearlings and 2 year old stallions are also able to go to the inspection to see their potential and to gain advice from the judges. 3 and 4 year old stallions will be ‘provisionally’ approved. Once these stallions are 5 years old they should be presented at an inspection to receive their ‘life time’ licence.

As of 1st January 2020, all stallions must be tested and be free from PSSM1 before being entered to the inspection. Stallions that are PSSM P1/P1 or N/P1 will not be accepted to enter the inspection.

As of 1st January 2023, all new stallions, and those applying for lifetime licence must be tested for Foal Immunodeficiency Syndrome (FIS). Stallions that test N/FIS are still able to get license. FIS is only a potential problem is both parents carry FIS. Therefore, if your stallion is tested FIS/N, you should recommend to mare owners that they test their mare for FIS, to ensure only breeding to FIS N/N mares. If the stallion tests FIS/N, this result will be published with the stallions information and put on the license certificate.

PSSM2 testing is currently not required, but it is recommended. If you wish to test your stallion for PSSM2 please contact PSHT and we will arrange the test for you.

During the inspection the stallions will first be judged by a TYPE inspector. They will determine if your tinker is GRAI, COB or VANNER. Next, the judges will check your horse is sound on hard ground. The judges will then assess your tinkers conformation and movement.

The stallion should then have x-rays of the hocks and knees . This can be before or after the stallion inspection. The inspection report / certificate must be within one month after the inspection that the stallion was judged.
Standards set at the x-rays:
The hock (splash) within the class: 0-2
Osteochondrosis (OC) in the knee or hock: A-B
Front legs:
Navicular bone quality 0,1,2 are acceptable, 3-4 are not acceptable
Sesamoid bone quality is not selected, 1-4 Acceptable.
Osteoarthritis class 0,1,2,3 are Acceptable Class 4 unacceptable
The veterinarian have to make a report with any comments. The veterinary also needs to formulate the conclusion: for example, “no objection for the breeding”.

The fertility of the stallion does not currently need to be tested. However, if you chose to test your stallions semen, you are welcome to send us the results.

Please contact the studbook before asking your vet to x-ray your tinker for the most up to date list of x-rays and conditions needed.
Stallion owners must renew their membership each year for their stallion to continue using PSHT covering slips, and to be advertised on the PSHT website and social media. It is the responsibility of the stallion owner to ensure the studbook has up to date photos, videos, contact information and prices.
